Founded in 1995, Meza Dental Care specializes in Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. The facility is located in the capital city of San José, 25 minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport. The area itself draws in 1 million visitors each year to take in the beaches, rain forest, Arenal Volcano, and other tourist attractions. The country has one of the best health care systems in Latin America and on occasion, has been ranked higher than the United States.1  The clinic was selected by Discovery Travel as one of the top five medical tourism destinations in Latin America. Harvard’s Mastership Program also selected Meza Dental Care for one of their case studies.

Specialists use the latest techniques in Cosmetic Dentistry such as bonding, teeth whitening, and porcelain crowns and veneers. Restorative services include dental implants and porcelain bridges. General dentistry services provided are composite white fillings, gum surgery, laser teeth whitening, ZOOM teeth whitening, oral rehabilitation, root canal treatment, smile design and restoration, tooth bonding, and wisdom teeth removal. They use a range of procedures: Nobel Biocare, Dental Implants IPS Empress Esthetic, Porcelain Veneers IPS Empress Esthetic, and Mercury-free White Fillings.

The facility’s team is made up of specialists in Cosmetic Dentistry, Oral Rehabilitation, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics, and Endodontics, Dental Implants, and General Dentistry.2  Their resumes and photos are available on the website for easy viewing. Doctor Meza, the facility’s director, furthered his studies at UCLA and Doctor Obando attended the Nobel Biocare Training Institute in California. Other specialists studied in Chile or Mexico and a few of them are professors in their respective fields. All of them are recognized by Costa Rica’s Board of Dental Surgeons.3

Meza Dental Care treats patients from world-wide, the majority of which are from the United States. A ticket from major airline hubs in the United States may cost $300 to $600. Transportation between the clinic and airport can be provided. Service can be provided in Spanish or English.

The facility’s website is clean and professional and is viewable in English or Spanish. The informative website is easy to navigate. One may view photos of the building, the lobby, and treatment areas. An inquiry and estimate can be made directly through the site.

Quality health care in Costa Rica doesn’t cost as much as in the United States. Dental implants cost about $850 at the facility, but about twice as much in the United States.  Likewise, porcelain veneers typically cost $3504, while stateside one may shell out $975~$2200.5  For those reasons, both BlueCross BlueShield and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina have affiliated with Meza Dental Care through Companion Global Dental.6

Good testimonials for Meza Dental Care run rampant. One patient said she was returning to receive treatment superior to that in the United States and that she “would recommend Meza to any and everyone seeking dental care. Including the airfare, it's actually still less expensive than having work done in the States.”7  Another review was in agreement, calling the clinic and the treatment he received “first rate”.8

One blogger went into detail about the excellent health care he received in Costa Rica. Originally seeking treatment in the United States, Scott was given estimates between $31,000 and $43,000. He received an immediate professional and friendly response from Meza Dental Care to his initial inquiry. Doctor Meza followed up with a phone call saying all Scott had to do was show up and they would take care of the rest, even finding lodging if necessary. Someone was there to transport him between the airport, clinic, and hotel.  After X-rays, replacing a dozen fillings, root canals, 6 porcelain crowns, composite whitening, and arrangements for 3 implants the bill came to less than $8000. A sonogram and three visits to another hospital cost him less than $100. In conclusion of his medical tour, Scott says, “So there you have it if you want to live on the wild side and visit with friendly people who aren’t out to rob you blind - maybe it’s time to schedule a medical vacation.”9
