Prisma Dental Clinic, which meets or exceeds the American Dental Association’s guidelines, has been providing over 16 years of dental care in Costa Rica. Situated in San José, the facility is 25 minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport. The area itself attracts 1 million visitors each year to take the tourist sites like the beaches, rain forest, and Arenal Volcano. Costa Rica has one of the best health care systems in Latin America and on occasion, has been ranked higher than the United States.1

The clinic’s staff members use the latest technology and procedures in General, Cosmetic, and Restorative Dentistry. General Dentistry services include routine cleaning, fillings, Laser Whitening, and orthodontics. They provide services for braces or brackets, Invisalign braces, retainers, implants, veneers, custom made posts, Porcelain inlays and onlays, resins and bonding, Periodontics, Alveoloplasty, Apicectomy, dentures, and mouth guards. There are a variety of crowns and bridges to choose from: metal, porcelain, Ziconium Oxide, Captek, or High Noble, and removable bridges. Along with dental surgery they also perform root canals, wisdom molar surgery, and plastic gum surgery. Other cosmetic procedures provided are bone grafts, sinus lifts, gingivoplasty, and permanent makeup. The on-site lab allows for making and adjusting everything on the spot.2

Doctor Rubinstein and Doctor Cordero have more than 23 years of experience in dentistry. Doctor Cordero is esteemed for her full-mouth restoration and aesthetic work. Doctor Cordero excels in dental implants. Both received training in Costa Rica, Canada, the United States, and Switzerland.

Quality health care in Costa Rica doesn’t cost as much as in the United States. Porcelain veneers typically cost $300 each at the clinic, while in the United States one may shell out $975-$2200. Depending on materials, crowns may cost $250-$6503, but $500-$3000 stateside. For those reasons, both BlueCross BlueShield and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina have affiliated with Prisma Dental Clinic through Companion Global Dental.4

For those traveling from overseas, there is a patient coordinator to assist in scheduling appointments and to arrange for lodging and sightseeing. Any care received at the clinic will need to be paid out of pocket, but an insurance claim form can be filled out on site for reimbursement by one’s dental insurance company.

The clinic’s website is professional, easy to navigate, and available in English or Spanish. An email address and phone number are posted in several places for easy access. The doctors’ resumes are available as is a form to make inquiries. Also on site are a FAQ, terminology glossary, and photographs of the facility and its staff members.

The reviews are almost nothing but positive. In a discussion forum, one patient said she had a bad experience and her “teeth really suffered”, but didn’t go into detail. Others in the thread were extremely happy with the care they received. Another, who was returning to Prisma Dental Clinic, recommended them very highly and said, “More than 65 percent of Prisma's busy practice is on international patients; they have literally thousands of very happy patients who swear by them.”5

Another patient who was also returning to Prisma Dental Clinic had glowing remarks about her experience. She had accidentally arrived a week earlier than expected, but they fit her in despite the fact that they were booked and it was a holiday. She had a root canal, 3 crowns, and other work done for less than $2000 instead of the $11,000+ it would have cost her in North Carolina. Her local dentist said the crowns done at the clinic were “far better workmanship and quality than the other two”, which were done locally. She concluded by saying, “They are exceptional people with a first class and completely modern practice. They had x-ray machines that are newer than anything locally here and the fact that they control the entire process is very important to me.”6
