CHRISTUS Muguerza Alta Especialidad has been providing medical care for 74 years. The “highly specialized” private hospital in Monterrey is considered to be one of the most important healthcare facilities in Mexico. Between it and the two general hospitals, all under the CHRISTUS Muguerza Group, a patient can seek treatment in almost every medical field such as: cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, gynecology, dentistry, neurology, and cosmetic surgery. It is the only hospital in Latin America to have its Analysis, Pathology and Cytology Laboratory certified by the College of American Pathologists. Similarly, it is the first in Mexico to receive accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), who also gave it their Gold Seal of Approval, their highest approval awarded.1  The only other medical facility to receive JCI accreditation in Mexico is Hospital San José.

General medicine services include diagnostic studies, cardiology, endoscopy, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, neurophysiology, and oncology. Specialists perform general, cardiovascular, orthopedic, cosmetic, transplants, ophthalmology, and spinal fusion surgeries, among others. Specialists provide services for general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry. Complementary specialties include rehabilitation, pathology, and home care. The facility also has intensive care, a Cath lab, blood bank, and emergency services, a pharmacy, a 24-hour cafeteria, and a chapel. The facility’s telemedicine system allows patients in other hospitals world-wide to be monitored, provided they have the technology.2

In 1934, José Muguerza founded the hospital that later became the Muguerza Group. In 2001, the Muguerza Group partnered with CHRISTUS Health Systems, a Texas based non-profit health system owning numerous medical providers and services in over 70 North American cities3  and 6 hospitals in Mexico. The alliance formed the largest healthcare system in northern Mexico4, making it possible for Muguerza Group to offer diverse medical services. The hospital’s Heart Institute is affiliated with the University of Monterrey and GE Medical Systems, training specialists in areas such as in anesthesiology, internal medicine, neonatology, and cardiology.5

CHRISTUS Muguerza’s medical staff received training in Mexico and/or the United States, including Harvard and John Hopkins universities. Its Medical Chief is a Member of the American College of Surgeons. For online viewing, are surgeons’ photos and their positions, but training and certifications are only displayed for its medical staff board.

The same quality of medical treatment in Mexico can be up to 60% less than of that in the United States. According to a study by CHRISTUS Health, in Mexico the cost of a hip replacement is $12,000, while in the United States it runs from $43,000 to $63,000.6  One man underwent laser eye surgery at CHRISTUS Muguerza for $1,500, whereas stateside he would have paid $4,000.7  The facility accepts international insurance from MetLife, New York Life, ING, and Generali, with which it has contracts.

CHRISTUS Murguerza’s website doesn’t specify which services are provided at which of its facilities. Available are descriptions about procedures performed and a quality report from CHRISTUS Health.  Their Medical TravelSM, an online application, allows for patients to manage their health information, request information about services and prices, schedule appointments, review doctors’ profiles, request elective procedures, and make travel arrangements. Also on the website is a floor plan and information about Monterrey and Mexico. Aside from a couple blurbs and virtual tours of Alta Especialidad and Sur, no other information is available to differentiate the two. Some may regard this as a lack of organization on its part.

One cosmetic surgery patient gave CHRISTUS Murguerza “excellents” for its value, staff responsiveness, equipment, and privacy. The pain medications she received were “good”. On the website are scanned thank you letters to staff members. All of them are positive and on CHRISTUS Murguerza’s stationary. The absence of testimonials off the website may or may not speak for the quality of healthcare provided at CHRISTUS Muguerza Alta Especialidad.
