Kingsbury Hospital, based in Cape Town, South Africa, is a part of the Life Healthcare Group, one of the largest private healthcare providers outside the US. Kingsbury is a medium sized hospital with 134 beds, 7 theatres and a high-tech intensive care unit. The group, as a whole, has received multi-site ISO 9001:2000 accreditation, in 2007, as well as ISO 27001:2005 certification for its modern IT system. This cutting edge database makes keeping details of patients between hospitals easy and efficient. The hospital is situated amongst beautiful historical buildings, and has links with some of South Africa’s leading medical research facilities.2
The website is simple but professionally designed and full of information for patients, but has little specific information for patients thinking of visiting the beautiful tourist destination of South Africa. Kingsbury Hospital does have a public relations officer who will arrange accommodation for relatives, if required, but that seems to be the limit of the assistance given.1 However, South Africa is already a major destination for conventional tourism so is well served by regular flights and a multitude of accommodation options for relatives and assistants.7
The services offered at the facility are wide and varied, covering most aspects of the healthcare needed for the surrounding population. Theses include plastic and reconstructive surgery, general surgery, dentistry, dermatology, neurosurgery and orthopedic procedures amongst others. The facility also has a number of specialties, being amongst the pioneers for safer abdominal aortic procedures and rectifying pelvic floor dysfunctions. For the aortic procedure, the theatre has specialist x-ray equipment for the insertion of stents into the aorta.1
In terms of facilities and equipment, Kingsbury Hospital is extremely well equipped, possessing the latest diagnostic and treatment facilities. These include a radiology department with CT scanner, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and a state of the art vascular ward.1 It also possesses modern and well equipped operating facilities which match similar facilities anywhere else in the world.1
In terms of recovery facilities, as well as wards, the hospital offers en-suite recovery rooms with telephones and offers a range of high quality food choices.1 There is no information about the pricing structure at the hospital, but South Africa tends to be far cheaper than similar facilities in the US and Europe.
There are a few reviews about Kingsbury Hospital and they tend to paint an unflattering portrait of the services. One patient was forced to spend an extra night in the facility after a mistake from a nurse but the hospital refused to pay.3 Another complained that the account ting department is a mess and refused to give a refund that was promised.4
The facility does seem to have a few problems with billing as another customer complained about being overcharged.5 One of the doctors came in for criticism after being unhelpful towards a pediatric patient.6 In the interests of fairness, it must be noted that the review site on which many of these reviews are posted has been criticized for not allowing institutions to respond fairly without paying a fee.
